My First Sewing Project: Pillow!

Last week I started playing with my sewing machine. My Nana sat down with me for hours and taught me the basics. We used all 8 of the feet that came with my machine (which is awesome by the way, here is the post about getting it for christmas). Once I had some confidence, she taught me how to cut and pin the pieces for an envelope pillow, and then I sewed it! Oh and I only used the one normal foot for the pillow obviously :)

It's the ikat-ish black and cream polka dot one :)

Honestly it wasn't that hard. I had bigged it all up in my mind and now I feel like I could sew anything! Even a coat or a thousand pairs of jeans for barbie! HA just kidding. Maybe another pillow ;)

It's a bit of a tight fit, I used one of my $1 down pillow inserts. I washed them all two weekends ago (finally) and they poofed up into giant balls. I had to punch this one for a while to get it to go back down in size.

I did a little trick my Nana taught me for the corners. I ran two perpendicular lines to form the initial corner, then went back and laid a diagonal line cutting across the corner. Somehow, using ancient voodoo magic, that made it have sharp corners.

Also, don't be judging the tiny scrap of black paint on my nails!

I love the print. It's Moda... it has a crazy name like puttin' on the ritz or something but I threw the receipt away and I forgot. I can check my account at fabric.com though.

So, how did I do for a first timer? :)

  4. Oh no. Pillows are gateway pieces...next you'll be thinking you can sew quilts. Not that I would know. :P I actually find cutting the stuff a lot harder than the actual sewing.

    I REALLY like that fabric!!
