Well Well Well, We Found Buried Treasure!

Alternate title: Timmantha Fell Down the Well OR How to Fix a Moist Crawl Space

I have a really thrilling post today. Ever wondered how to install a ventilation well? Ever wondered how it works? No? Well you're going to learn!

You'll especially enjoy it because you might find hidden treasures in your yard such as what we found. Here is a sneak peek. I'm going to be mean and make you read all about crawlspace ventilation wells first though.

So as I've mentioned before, our house's previous owners thought it'd be a really neat idea to fill the ventilation wells at the front of the house in with dirt and the concrete shut the vent at the side. 'Cause, you know, it's really cool to make your crawl space into a moist greenhouse for SEVEN years. We're seriously lucky there is zero mold or termites considering it was literally raining underneath there when our inspector discovered it. He came out of there with his t shirt soaked.

That very day we dug up the wells at the front of the house and completely destroyed the "lovely" poke vines that were taking it over. Sadly I don't have a before picture aside from the realty stock photo.

Those are just weeds.

After digging it up so the vents could breath we let it stay that way for a  month.

Classy Neighbors.

It wasn't THAT bad, I snapped this picture after Rob and I dragged the landscaping fabric out of the bed, but it didn't look welcoming.

Anyhow, as you can see by the next picture, we only uncovered the majority of the vent, we didn't have the proper tools or a replacement well to put in yet.

In the end, we still didn't have the proper tools and didn't feel like investing $30 into a shovel, so we used my grandma's hoe. It worked really well actually.

It's fairly easy to install a ventilation well though so I'll go into it quickly in case any one else has weird previous owners who wanted a moist crawl space.

First, you need a galvanized well piece. Go to Lowes and just say you need a crawlspace well. They're $20.  I bought this style to match the other we had under the other front window. They do sell plastic ones.

Next, dig a massive hole. you want to dig a hole thats a few inches LOWER than the frame of the vent. Like so,

Now put the well against the vent to dry fit it.

It needs to budge a little to the right.

Then you're supposed to predrill some holes in your masonry with a brick/concrete drill bit. That failed for us. We had a heavy duty drill and the appropriate bit, all from Black and Decker but it just spun uselessly against the brick. Instead, we drilled into the mortar between the bricks. I'm not sure if that's street legal but it worked. Make sure you drill with a bit that is a size down from the size of your screw.

You have to use special screws, like your fancy drill bit. We used these. They were $2.98 for 8 from Lowes.

Still rockin' the friendship bracelet.
Now drill in the screws. I didn't take a picture of this part because it was a 2 person process. I had to hold the heavy steel well up while Rob screwed it in.

Finally, back fill in your dirt and you're done!

Also, ignore the neighbor with the fancy pebble garden and carefully trimmed out vent wells.

And Viola! Now your house can breathe. Literally.

So that was just the one vent. On the other side of the door, the proper well was in place (but not bolted in, tut tut) but it was filled in with soil so we dug all of that out, and pulled out 2 beer cans, a lighter, a mcdonalds bag, a dollar store bag, some pens and god knows what else. Who throws trash on their flower beds?!

That's a crumpled beer can in the well. The other stuff is in the picture too though. It's like a Where's Waldo game!

The third vent at the back of the house had this wonderful gem buried inside it.

I've been told this is like the True Blood doll. Whatever that means.

Creepy baby! I've named her Timmantha (the girl version of Timmy)... since she fell down the well. ;) A friend of mine is convinced that the house now has bad vibes and needs an exorcism. I like her though, she's watching over our crawlspace and thus, our house.

While the found beer cans annoyed me, I am just concerned that the owners buried a demon baby. I hope it's not a ritualistic poltergeist or anything. Maybe a kid did it to get back at their sibling?

I didn't bother removing her, I figure I can scare the heck out of people who come to have a BBQ over here. Or maybe just the guy who cuts our lawn for us right now. Haha he's going to get a nasty shock.

Anyone else discovered some disturbing things from their previous owners? If I can remember, I'll take a picture of the kitchen drawers next time I go by. They have old packets of solidified soy sauce, half n half, and  feminine products in them. 'Cause, you know, it's normal to keep that in the kitchen.

Fall Wreath

I'm not a craft person... at all really. But I really want to make this wreath:

It's in the new Williams and Sonoma catalog. Obviously I don't want to plop a hundred bucks on it, but I think it'd be a fairly straightforward DIY with a little help from my friend, the Dollar Store. We'll see how it goes.

A Tale of Two Beds

Remember this post where we went to ikea and bought all sorts of fun things? Like the Hemnes bed in brownblack?

Well... we might have bought something bigger and better, literally.

My mom lives in a sleepy little town north of us that is full of horse farms. That much money in a small town equals an awesome Goodwill with classy expensive stuff there for cheap.

She sent us pictures of this king bed she found last sunday, on sale for $45:

So needless to say, we rushed up there right away and bought it!

But then we had to wait a week since Rob had to order himself a proper Thule roof rack for his Rabbit to support its weight. Even though we live in Kentucky, we don't know ANYONE with a truck.

Obviously that monstrosity was NOT going to fit in either of our hatchbacks.

Sadly, I was unable to get a good clear picture of it standing up. This is the best I got because the boys would NOT slow down for the crazy lady with the camera.

Speed demons stashing it in my mom's house.

It's over 6 ft tall , solid wood, and chunky :) It's much taller than me anyways. And black with red stain distressing, like Pottery Barn does.

In fact, it looks similar to their Caroline Bed with it's absolutely terrifying price of close to $2500 for the King.

It makes me wonder what the maker of the bed was? It's solid oak mainly, one of the bottom supports looks like pine. If it wasn't from the sleepy little wealthy town I wouldn't even question it really.

Yeah they leaned it up backwards too!

I like how it scrolls backwards at the top there. Well hopefully you sort of got an idea about what it looks like. Sorry!

It's not perfect though (of course, it's from Goodwill). There are a few places like this:

And the footboard is missing it's balls (ha).

I figure I can buy some more finials from Lowes or search around for something ball-ish from Restore and paint it to match.

Anyways, we think it looks 100x chunkier, classier, and ooh la la than the Hemnes and it's just funny that after a year of looking for king beds at thrift stores, we find one AFTER we broke down and bought one from Ikea. Oh well, now we have an excuse to back to Ikea :)

Anyone else like chunky beds? Anyone recognize where ours came from?

One Warning and One Feature!!

I just want to mention two small things tonight.

First, remember I bought a quart of the new Olympic One paint (in Feildstone by Benjamin Moore) for the blue dresser, right?

Expecting to find a color similar to this:

I instead opened it up to find this:

BRIGHT FUCHSIA!

Cue the panic and frantic stirring! Don't worry though, after my arm about fell off from the years of stirring I did, the fuchsia eventually mixed into the gray and it went away. I'm not sure if that's a unique color to ONE paint or what, but I've never had THAT big of shock before when I open the can. I think the pink is the magic primer though... I'm just guessing, since the gray paint was still perfectly mixed up at the bottom. So, just expect some surprises with ONE paint!

Rhoda at Southern Hospitality featured me again for my blue dresser score at the thrift store.

See it here!

Thanks so much again Rhoda! Now I feel pressured to get this thing done! Good thing I whacked it a few times with a hammer earlier ;)

Birthday, Knobs, and Paint.

I think this could go down in history as the worst week ever for me. I started the week sick as a dog with strep throat, ended up quitting my job (there is a back story to that that is a bit personal), and then finished the week with a nice round of some sort of stomach bug or food poisoning. Caused by chili most likely... do you know how horrible it is to have chili come back up? I hope you never will!! Ha. I've not ate yet today or taken my antibiotics for the strep yet because I'm terrified to start it all over again. The only bright spot was my small family birthday dinner on Thursday :)

I got a new phone, the sprint EVO, so now I can check my blogs and stuff while on the go! Ha, I could do it before on my blackberry but it was NOT easy to do.

I also got these two things from Urban Outfitters that I had been drooling (and blogging!) over!

And

I'm so excited!

Unfortunately I haven't made much progress on the dresser, I've only sanded it. Being so ill meant that I definitely didn't want to smell paint fumes. I also need to head to Restore anyways or wait til Monday to catch the Knob sale at Hobby Lobby. Those wooden ones have to go.

I'm thinking some gold hardware on it, like the inspiration vanity,

...hence the need to get to Restore, they have gold knobs there by the bag fulls.

Or I've been thinking of these egg shaped knobs at Hobby Lobby:

$6 for a knob is horrible, but $3 with the 50% off sale is muuuch better.

Hopefully it's look something like the Nester's office dresser:

Hers is painted Halycon Green by Sherwin Williams though. I considered using that color, but it looks so hunter green-y on the chip. But it reads as a robins egg on her blog? Anyone ever used this color?

Here's hoping that next week is a bit better for me! Have a fabulous Saturday!

A New Addition

Whew, can you tell I've been ill? That last post is chock full of grammar errors, sorry. I went back and edited it.

I'm still feeling horribly ill and sickly though so I just popped in to say that I added a link to my Pinterest boards on the right side panel:

Now you can see what I've been up to and pinning. I really only pin images of homes that I like or ideas in decor I want to try though. I'm sorry if you were looking for makeup, recipes or random images of unicorns!

If you need an education on what Pinterest is, refer to this blog post.

And I changed my pinterest name too to Elz @ Housepour, I would have linked it up to the blog sooner but I couldn't figure out how to change my url to stop it from showing my last name. I figured it out finally. I don't want any creepers! :)

Oh and here's a unicorn picture since I failed you on pinterest:

You're Welcome ;)

Blue Moooooooon

Sorry folks, am down for the count with Strep Throat!! I'll be back as soon as I recover!

For now I'll leave you with pictures of my newest project:

We got this small dresser/ mirror combo at the local Restore in town for $35. Normally I like to be around $25, but I liked the shape of the mirror and plan on removing it from the supports (and throwing those away, they date it so bad) and using it in another area of the house as a chalkboard sign. :)

The pictures don't show it well but it is an eye popping shade of blue. It will be changed. I bought a quart of Olympic ONE satin paint color matched to Benjamin Moore's Fieldstone. I'm curious to see how that paint will work out.

The paint job is not so great. See the dings and brush marks?

It has such cute legs though!!

More damage shots..

Scarred top. I think whoever refinished is not so good at painting!

Last shot. And yes I took these photos in the basement stairwell. No way was I going to lug it up into the 98F  sunlight!!

Here is a picture of a vanity painted in fieldstone so that you can get an idea of where I'm going with it:

Okay feeling nauseous now. Later!
